Hats to you

_DSC0029
When I was in Madrid this summer I was interviewed by the style section of a local newspaper and the headline was something about how I couldn't believe people there didn't wear more hats considering the wicked heat. While that wasn't the most important thing I said I still stand by my belief that hats should be more part of our summer wardrobe. This boy knows what I'm talking about! -His shoes are pretty great too!

This is one of my many favourite relaxed MK outfits. It is from quite a while back and I was so happy to see it again on Olsens Anonymous. I just love the combination of the oversized t-shirt with all the chunky, amazing jewelry!

I like a lot of the outfits that Drew Barrymore has been wearing lately, and here are some of my favourites. Which is your favourite of these three? Mine is no. 2.

Too cool for school

_DSC0025-Edit
With their pouty poses these girls look like the school Queen Bees. But that's just for the camera. In reality they were nice as could be. So what's working here? Beige lace motorcycle jacket and dress (not together) the pink hued hair and off the shoulder top all look great without looking like they're trying too hard. Because they're so not!

Long + short

I have developed a slight obsession with this type of outfit. I love wearing short denim shorts together with long cardigans or long, delicate blouses or shirts. Adding a vintage bag and statement shoes adds the perfect touches (+ a lot of large rings!)

On my fall list

3. A red, sheer shirt

5. Grey + white lace
6. A tutu skirt with an oversized jumper

TUTORIAL- Pre-shrink Wool...Fast and Easy at Home! (revised)

Many of us are ready to sew our fall wardrobes....and I am too!
So I thought you might be interested to know of an easy yet professionally effective method that I use to pre-shrink wool yardage. It is one of a few methods that I learned during my Tailor Apprenticeship.

(This is a revised version of one of the most popular tutorials I have written. Since I have so many new blog followers since it was first published here last year, I thought it was time to revisit it :)

First...the fabric! This luscious yardage is from my stash. One of the pieces was purchased from Gorgeous Fabrics a few seasons ago. The green check yardage is 100% tropical wool crepe, the gray check yardage is a blend of wool and silk.

Why pay big bucks to take this fabric to the dry-cleaner to steam shrink it,
when we can do it easily at home?

Wool Yardage

Now the method:

  • Serge or zig-zag the raw cut edges of the fabric.
  • Next, wet 2-3 clean thick towels with very HOT water until they are quite wet but NOT dripping. Use towels you have had for a while, so that lint will not be transferred from the towels to the fabric ;)
  • Now toss the hot wet towels and the fabric into your clothes dryer.
  • Set the dryer on HIGH heat, and tumble the fabric and hot wet towels for 30-40 minutes.   (If you are using a high napped wool, or are just unsure about this method, test on a 6"x6" swatch of your fabric before committing the entire length.)
  • If you have a steam setting on your dryer...skip the towels and tumble with steam for 20-30 minutes on high heat. If your fabric is still damp after 20-30 minutes, dry without steam for about 10 more minutes.
    • Lay the fabric flat until it is cool.
Align CenterThat's it! Your wool yardage is now ready for the needle.
The appropriate interfacing for most wool and wool blends
is PRO-WEFT Fusible or ProTailor Deluxe.

    Wool Yardage After SteamingAlign Center

As you can see above, this Dryer "Machine Steam Shrink" method did not visibly change the fabric at all, and it's hand is still soft and smooth. However it did shrink. Each piece was 60" wide and 2 yards long before steam-shrinking. After, the green 100% wool piece measured 59.5" wide and was 2.5" shorter in length. The gray wool/silk blend was still 60" wide but 1.75" shorter in length.

    Amanda Dolan at her opening

    amandaDolan
The fall art season has not yet begun and I've gone to two gallery openings this weekend. Painter Amanda Dolan art is decidely feminine -dripping with hearts and the color pink– but underneath there is something a little bit darker and edgier, not unlike the artist herself. Her dress split in red and black almost seems like a reflection of this...if we were to take it literally, which we won't. If you're in Soho check out her show at the Ward-Nasse gallery now through September 16th.

This is one of those outfits where everything is just perfect. I wish I had every single piece so I could wear this too + her hair is amazing.

    Old Spitalfields Market: Antiques Day

    DSC_0015_2
When I was a little boy early on Friday mornings my dad would often take me to the Bermondsey Antiques Market, which fascinated me. Especially, as I had been told that under some obscure medieval English law the traders were allowed to sell "dodgy" and stolen goods (See: Marché ouvert).

Ever since then I have loved antique markets and I now continue the tradition with my one-year-old Arthur, taking him to antique markets. Above and below, some of those traders at the Spitalfields market and a short movie about a new evaluation programme Old Spitalfields Market is pioneering, which I thought may interest you...

    Shaved sides part 2

    _DSC0019
So I wanted to show one more girl with this type of haircut...and now I'm done. I also like this girl because she's so androgynous...usually it's the boys who rock that look (and the occasional model). The skateboard's a nice (if unintentional) touch!

    Trend alert: Shaved sides

    shavedsides1
I know I brought this up last winter but the shaved sides style has taken off and is here with a vengeance. What I hate are the girls with one side shaved and the other side long and stringy looking. It looks to me like they started copying Britney Spears head shaving fiasco and then suddenly stopped. But I do like the short on top looks on girls. Emma here is particularly adorable. Also love her shoes and Peggy Noland jacket.

Check this out tomorrow if you're in town...

People sometimes ask me where I go to shoot for the blog. The Deitch Gallery openings were always a favorite, so it stands to reason that The Hole, run by Kathy Grayson, formerly of Deitch will have some kick ass shows as well...this one looks like it will be. 116 Greene Street, SOHO NYC

I didn't post yesterday. Very rare and my apologies. But to make up for it I'll do two postings today. What do we think of these looks? Do we like the cartoon print sweatshirt that reminds me of children's bedding with the leggings and black shoes? I found these boys rather endearing in an odd sort of way.

    Ready for the Fall

    fallUponus
Today was the first day in a long time that, not only did I not need to use the air conditioner (which I loathe) but could comfortably wear jeans. I love this mild in-between weather and this look is perfect for it.

    Gaga Inspired?

    gagaInspiered
I don't know if Lady Gaga inspires more creative dressing or if she's just a reflection of our times but I suspect it's a bit of both. I'm not saying this girl is trying to be her, but simply that the idea of wearing a leotard as your main garment doesn't seem as strange as it would in the pre-Gaga era. I like the Lanvinesque jacket and her big glittery bag. But what I really love is her makeup (although the lip color clashes with the red on the jacket) I don't normally comment on makeup but her lips are a great color and look stained and glossy at the same time as though she's just eaten forbidden fruit...and she wisely kept her eyes simple and just a hint of blush on seriously flawless skin. See below for a better view of what I'm talking about!
