NYFW tent trend: Over-the-knee boots

As much as I love seeing what the designers have created I love seeing what ideas from previous seasons have taken hold. Over the knee boots were big the last few seasons on the runway and they were everywhere on the audiences at the shows -and even on some of the girls working at the tents. (and on some of the runways although others had more just up-to-the-knee options) And for those who liked the look but didn't have the boots the thigh high stockings with nylons beneath achieved the same effect admirably.

Cool Couple

"Cool" isn't really adequate a description. But chic seems more fussy and any versions of the f word (fashionable fashionistas etc) are so overused to lose all meaning. So we'll settle for cool unless someone offers up a better suggestion...anyways they work together without looking planned and appear unusually serene for the tent scene...
Anyways they're Brittany Pham & Shawn Kaleka and they're west coasters visiting the east which might explain the more laidback vibe.

Seen at RETNA presented by Vladimir Roitfeld and Andy Valmorbida

Last Thursday night (has it already been almost a week?) there was an opening in Tribeca of LA grafitti artist RETNA that looked like it was out of a film about Soho in the Eighties. The space was dark and cavernous and full of people that were both very stylish and somehow distinctly New York. The coat on the right caught my eye in a black sea and the graphic energy seemed to match the artwork. It also seems to be part of the new looser, graphic trend emerging that I'm calling boho chic. The girl on the left is also on trend with the fashion crowd in her over the knee platform boots. Something I've seen ALOT of in the tents: maybe because other than fashion week you might get mistaken as a hooker?

Skirting the lengths

We all saw a return to longer skirt lengths on the Spring 2011 runways this fall. And little by little I'm seeing this out at night as well. This girl appears to be trying to have the best of both worlds by working a longer lace dress over a smaller body-con black one. It's an interesting alternative and one I haven't seen before. The messily pulled back hair and filigreed belt buckle gives it a slight prairie girl vibe but she saved it from being too referential to country by avoiding cowboy boots and sticking with some great black platform booties.

shirt/dress

This is a kind of different take on a shirt dress as it's more of a tunic...I'm not completely convinced it worked but I'm not convinced it doesn't...like the knee highs but think a chunkier soled shoe would work better. (or maybe I'm just a little cranky 'cuz it's a cold Monday! ;) )

Perfectly turned out

They say the Devil's in the details and I don't know about that, but it's the details that definitely caught my eye in this instance. I love how the dress has a mirrored rorshach test print and how she added a bold red necklace that kind of does the same thing with just enough of a turquoise accent to bring out that color in the dress. Then her nails (all of them) match the necklace and the delicate fur jacket complements the dress and her skintone. Finally the shoes and bag don't match just enough to work –if you know what I mean!

Shoesssssssssss

Yes this was taken during NYFW but there were so many great looks then I couldn't get them all up at once. I like the top, the jeans are...jeans, but what I'm obsessed with are the shoes. I'm rather enamored lately with shoes like this that are so architectural. I also think that even though they are so specific eventually they will be dated, that specificity will make them coveted when they're no longer being made. Which is to say they will be collector's pieces. So collect while you can!

3 on Bond Street

I saw these 3 on Bond Street. One of my favorite streets in NYC. It's just a few blocks but there's this crazy building on it that I love architecturally plus OAK NYC which is one of my favorite stores...and Bond no. 9 - another favorite where all the perfumes are named after places in New York and Daryl K -where I spent $110 each on 2 pairs of super low rise stretch pants like 12 years ago when super low was relatively new and $110 for a pair of pants seemed outrageous to me. (and then $110 seemed reasonable, now it seems outrageous again–**and nothing at Daryl K comes close to $110 so I don't much shop there anymore) But this isn't about me or Bond Street! Why do I like them? Dunno I just do. I especially love the furry muppet jacket of the girl in the middle.

**I stand corrected. The day after I posted this I received an email from Jovonnie who works at Daryl K that said  I found a few items that you may like that are under $110, such as the Black Shirt Dress which retails for $90, the Leather Shoulder Purse which retails for $75, the Chambray Rolled-Sleeve Shirt which retails for $70, the Tie-Dyed Safari Jacket which retails for $60, and the Leopard Camisole which retails for $50. Hopefully these items will make you want to come back to Daryl K to shop!

a not-a-self-portrait portrait

So my neighbors moved out and I took advantage of the empty space to take some photos. I'm always a bit at odds when it's a photo of me: should I do what I feel or what makes the most sense for a style blog? Today I'm doing both and will post additional pix later in the week on Pixie Warhol.

Anyways, can we talk a moment about overalls? Which yes I AM wearing here –albeit they are silk and by Diane von Furstenberg– so it's not as though I'm going to be shoveling shit in them! Earlier in the year I noticed a small updip in the number of overalls I was seeing (like from zero to 3 pairs) which kind of makes sense if you think of the staying power that the jumpsuit and onesie have had in recent seasons. Anyhow, I scoffed at this trend and put it up at the top of my "I'll never..." list. But "I'll never" lists have a way of biting you in the ass - or at least mine do. (you know: I'll never be bi, I'll never go out with a girl etc -which is why I never say "I'll never have children" never mind my feelings about the unformed adults dominating popular culture)

This is a long explanation to say that I saw these and had to have them. I get bored of "the little black dress" and wanted something else to wear for those evening affairs that aren't too dressy but are still opportunities to dress up. In this instance I kept it casual with my cashmere knit hat that I wear all the time in my loft because it gets cold in the winter, a men's undershirt and my old school else anita stripper shoes which I have in black and white and for the record they are way more comfortable than my fav Louboutin leopard print platform booties.

a not-a-self-portrait portrait
