The 10 Best Dressed of the Week

Last week, the list mainly consisted of everyday outfits, but this week the tables have turned. The only piece featured is the dress, and mainly dresses for special events. Four of them are different takes on the little black dress while neutral tones are seen in five. One of the dresses stand out in the crowd when it comes to the colour palette, and I think you might guess who? Here's a hint: orange.

10. Claire Danes

The thing I like about this dress is that it is classic with a twist. The belt in the waist and the detailing around the neck adds an exciting element to an otherwise plain black dress. I like it when Claire Danes wears dresses like this - that's when she looks her best.

9. Olivia Palermo

I posted this outfit earlier this week, and I had to add it to the list because it is a very lovely outfit. I know that there is some debate around whether this dress is flattering or not, but I rarely disagree with Olivia's fashion choices, and I am not about to start now. And just to prove my point: Giambattista Valli is the designer behind the dress, and he knows sexy.

8. Reese Witherspoon

My favourite part of this Jason Wu dress is the top half. It is stunning! I love anything bodice - and lingerie inspired, and especially when it is a combination of black and nude. I think it's great that she wore that dark red nail polish together with it - a fun contrast to the neutral tones.

7. Eva Mendes

I am a huge Eva Mendes fan, as many of you might have understood by now. She always looks incredible at every event, and her everyday style is good too. Wearing this pale pink Versace gown suits Eva's sweet and sexy bombshell look. It is as if this dress was made for her.

6. Bianca Brandolini D'Adda

I must say that I really like this slightly different take on the little black dress. The detailing on the upper half of the dress is very playful and sexy. It's a bit too much material on the bottom half, but Bianca weighs it up by teaming the dress together with gorgeous accessories.

5. Kate Bosworth

This bright orange dress by Proenza Schouler was a favourite of mine on Friday, and it still is today. Kate Bosworth is the perfect starlet for this dress as it is so playful and girly yet cool and sophisticated at the same time. I am looking forward to seeing Kate in more bright colours as it looks so great on her.

4. Olivia Palermo

Olivia definitely gets around, and I wonder how she manages to look so wonderful at every event when it seems as if she attends like 50 each week. Some people are just born with style running through their veins (and a wallet to match their needs!). What I like so much about this outfit is the interesting  mismatching of all the different pieces.

3. Demi Moore

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Similar to many of you, I have a bad case of Balmainia, and whenever I see someone wearing a piece by Balmain, my heart jumps a heartbeat. Demi Moore looks insanely good in this black and gold dress from the fall 2010 colletion. She is the perfect woman for this dress!

2. Olivia Palermo

It is rare to see Olivia Palermo in a pair of flats. The only other time that I can recall seeing her in something other than stunning high heels, is when she walked around in a pair of oxfords. I really like the pale palette she has used for this outfit, mainly using nude and grey. Just brilliant, Olivia!

1. Eva Mendes

Eva has been looking amazing this week, wearing dresses from Versace to Oscar de la Renta. But it is the dress by Lela Rose that has made her reach the top of the list this week. If I could have any of the dresses on this list, it has to be this one (yes, more than the Balmain dress, believe it or not!). This is one of the best dresses I have seen for a while.

Happy Halloween Weekend

_DSC0044-Edit
So tonight all of NYC will dress (or undress) like Amanda Lepore does everyday. So the question is: who has more fun?

Rainy Saturday Afternoon

It has been a pretty slow Saturday for me today. I had a nice breakfast with friends this morning and nice chats of future projects.

It started to rain and get pretty chilly here in Montreal. I may have to retire my blazers to the closet and start wearing my coats from now on. Stéphane and I picked up a sweet little pumpkin pie this morning after breakfast for our Halloween diner tomorrow. I did not get much thrifting done today since the thrifh stores are full of people looking for last minute costumes. Tuesday will be my big shopping day for the shop, I am trying to buy up as much as I can till the Smart Design Mart sale at the beginning of December.

Tomorrow we plan to stay in and eat loads of candies and watch Night of the living dead :)

I tried to find old photos of me wearing a Halloween costume but the ones I have are pretty lame, my mother has no idea were the ones from when I was a child went. I am not a huge Halloween enthusiast but I do love curling up on the couch and watching scary movies and pumpkin pie!

I was wearing today:

-70s Corduroy blazer, vintage
-90s Little black velvet dress, vintage
-Tights, Hue
-Shoes, vintage Ferragamoes
-Umbrella, Dollarama
-Specs, American Optical (vintage frames)
-Little silver bow necklace, XXI

Collant – Hue

Chaussures Ferragamoes Vintages

Parapluie – Dollarama

Lunettes – American Optical (monture Vintage)

Bracelet – boucle en argent - XXI

Tutorial-- Quick, Easy, Draped Cowl Variations !

With even more draped cowl patterns like this one from McCalls appearing in recent pattern catalogs, this revisit of a popular tutorial I wrote a few years ago is even more relevant today.

So, now I'll show you how quick and easy it is to make countless variations like these shown below from a basic draped cowl neckline...that can be done in mere minutes!

First, start with a drape-front cowl (photo #1 below) already in your wardrobe, or make one with the many patterns that exist for this style.

As shown In photo #2, turn the garment inside out and flip the front facing up to expose the wrong side of front of the top.

Next, for the most basic variation, pinch some fabric near center front, twist it a bit, and hold the “twisted pinched” fabric with a rubber band, as shown in photo #3.  I am showing this with a regular rubber band so it shows up in the photo, however a small clear "ponytail" band works best. Later, if you want to make this design change permanent, the 'twist' can be stitched. Or just remove the band, and you have your original draped cowl back again :)

Now turn down the facing to cover the banded fabric, as shown in photo #4.

As shown in photo #5 below,  when the garment is turned right-side-out, the twisted detail becomes a new interesting design feature of the top.

Where you pinch and band the fabric is totally up to you: higher, lower, to the left or right of center, using 2 or 3 twists, etc. There are infinite possibilities for design variations like these.... Have fun!

Kate in Proenza Schouler S/S '11

At the 27th Annual Night of Stars on Thursday, Kate Bosworth turned up in this orange and pink dress fresh from Proenza Schouler's spring/summer 2011 collection. I adore how she has teamed it together with black heels and a black clutch as it brings out the black collar on the dress. A hint of black also brings out the acid colours of the dress. I am loving that more and more celebrities are wearing fun, bright colours.

I do love Proenza Schouler's S/S 2011 collection because exactly because of the bright colours, and also because of the materials used for the different pieces. Still, I must admit that the dress that Kate wore last night wasn't one of those that instantly caught my attention after seeing photos from the runway show. Seeing it on Kate has definitely made me notice it. Now I am craving it!

Chrissie Miller from Sophomore - Fashion Friday

chrissie
Chrissie is wearing Sophomore's brilliant "Flowers in the Attic" t-shirt -from the book that i stole from my babysitter to read the "dirty parts" when i was a kid and jeans by Court Jeans
Chrissie, along with Madeline von Froomer is the designer for the label Sophomore. Unapologetically at ease with herself in the world, she has none of the pretensions that you sometimes find in the fashion world. Which makes sense since she's a native new york city girl who began by making t-shirts for herself and her friends. So she wasn't trying to be a fashionista: she just did her own thing and the girls who loved her cool/casual style started following Sophomore. Not unlike how the really cool girl in highschool will inevitably divert a little attention from the Queen Bees without even trying...

You can find Sophomore at Opening Ceremony in Manhattan and Bird in Brooklyn and a bunch of other places as well as online. All the deets are on their site.

If you could live in another era, when would it be and why?
The 1960's in Los Angeles, Laurel Canyon.
I could have hung with Jim Morrison, Graham Parsons and Waylon Jennings!

What’s your favorite movie?
Beaver Trilogy

What is a current obsession? My boyfriend

Do you read fashion magazines?
I really dont. I mostly just check out style.com

Describe your style as a friend wouldI'm a jeans, t-shirt kinda person.

What style/trend (current or past) do you hope is never recycled
Ugg Boots

What style/trend would you like to see come back?High waisted jeans, I'm not into a low waist.

Has the internet changed the fashion industry? How?I think its great that anyone can look at images both old and new. I think it helps people who are interested in fashion learn their history.

Can we find you on twitter?
Yup! @chrissiemiller and @sophomorenyc

Finish this sentence:
I love New York because…I was born here.

Dewi Driegen as Friday Inspiration

A good outfit does not need to be harder than this. Well, it is quite hard to wear such a simple outfit and make it look incredible, like model Dewi Driegen does with this. I instantly want to pair my leather jacket with a pair of nude high heels. I also want to dye my hair the same colour as her and get my hairdresser to give me a sharp fringe. Stylewise, I sometimes think of Dewi as Kate Lanphear's little sister. Dewi is not as rock & roll as Kate, but there are elements in her style that remind me of the style director for US Elle.

Interview on Zink Magazine

Thank you Zink Magazine for featuring me! xoxo k ;)

Oh. And on an altogether different note. Like everyone else in the universe I cannot believe that Gretchen won Project Runway.  And not because of her challenging personality, but because I truly believe Mondo was much more talented and showed a better collection. Plus I'm not a west coast hippie granola girl and I could never imagine wearing the prints and colors from Gretchen's collection –even if she's "on trend" in that 1983-86 but add in a recession kinda way. Sigh...I don't know what's more depressing...that Gretchen won, that Nina and Michael wanted her to win or that I care? It kinda makes me not want to keep watching Project Runway though, know what I mean?

Hello gorgeous...

Okay, so some people win the genetic gene pool. But they can't help it. Still we can admire it. And the adorable studded vest...

Olivia Celebrating Elle's 25th Anniversary

On Tuesday, US Elle Magazine celebrated its 25th anniversary, and it was no surprise that Olivia Palermo turned up to the party. She looked fabulous as always, wearing a white a-line dress which makes me think of the 60s and people such as Twiggy and Audrey Hepburn. She teamed the dress with a pair of bright pink shoes which I think is very fun and unexpected of Olivia. Most of the time she is so classic and sharp in the way she dresses, but here she adds a little playfulness. I like it!

It was announced on Monday that "The City"will most likely not continue. I am actually quite sad to learn this, as I have watched all of the episodes from both season 1 and season 2 several times. I know that there were many who didn't take to the show, but I was one of those who liked it a lot. The reason was that it was set in New York, was packed with style inspiration by Olivia and quite often Whitney too, and it followed the dreams and the route of building a wonderful career. I will definitely miss it!

Vogue Nippon Getting Festive

The December 2010 issues are popping up, and according to the fashion industry it's time to be thinking about Christmas soon (even though it's still only October!). Ah well, there is no lagging behind when it comes to fashion. I wouldn't say that I am ready for Christmas yet (don't get me wrong, I LOVE Christmas!), but this cover for Vogue Nippon definitely puts me in a festive mood. It must be the sequined Emilio Pucci dress from the fall 2010 collection, and all the gold jewelry.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Also, I must admit that I love the blue lipstick used for the cover. I never used to be such a big fan of blue make-up, but lately it seems like I have been loving it since I praised the blue eyeshadow used for the cover of the November issue of Vogue Paris.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I absolutely adore the jewelry used in the photo above. It's the kind of unique pieces that you expect Olivia Palermo to wear. Hmm, I am already planning to wear lots of sequins and glitter together with large pieces of jewelry this Christmas...I wonder why?
